After the recent rains, some of the contour pathways at BROOMHILL have revealed places where the whenua naturally holds more water. Rather than draining or filling these areas, we’re exploring how to work with the wet ground and create a simple walkway that allows the water to remain part of the landscape. Together we’ll experiment with a traditional corduroy-style path, using small logs and woody materials laid across the soft ground to create a stable walking surface. With hand saws and simple tools, we’ll cut, shape and place the materials, learning as we go. This Season: The recent rain has made the movement and holding of water across the contourlines particularly visible. This is an opportunity to observe what the whenua is showing us and respond rather than impose.
